SETTING

The theory of the multiverse states that when any choice must be made, a universe is created for every possible outcome. At the dawn of 2008, a new universe was created. For the past four years, the United Nations have realized the world was dying and decided it was time for change. In order to do this, they abolished all intellectual property laws and formed the World-Development Team (WDT)–a fifty-year convention of the world's greatest innovators free of religious and personal moral standards, and funded by the top corporations, including Google, Facebook, and Apple. This group was designed to pioneer a new age, resembling the Renaissance and the Industrial Revolution. This is 2012. Within four years, stem-cell research is at a boom, Iraq is now a US colony by state of the United Nations, cars have shifted to becoming electric powered due to the extinction of fossil fuel,  and free online schools such as Khan Academy and Berlitz Online are accepted by the Departments of Education of the worlds leading countries. Many countries have converted into parliamentary or socialist regimes with either eclectic or atheist religious views. Old ideas, such as the Marxist theory of True Communism, are being revisited.

However there is an equal balance to the world. As comes with every innovation, an equal and opposite curse is brought upon us. Though the world seems perfect, even after only four years, things such as Anti-WDT riots, conspiracies of world-monopolizations, and smuggling of the more dangerous innovations have spread. In truth, the world is developing at a rate where it cannot handle itself. The world is ruled by free-thinkers, whose prime meaning of life is to create a better future, without completely understanding the repercussions of their actions. They are not blind to this context, but when you give such power to these already great minds, one can be sure that as the race to development goes on, so does the ever-going battle of ideas, such as is part of human nature.

We follow the life of Charlton Lawrence Mathewson Chase in the city of New York, up to now, one of the top cities in the world, and a key figure to the second Renaissance.

HISTORY

Charlton Lawrence Mathewson Chase, named after action star Charlton Heston, was born in Blue Springs, Mississipi on May 28, 1987 to the middle-class family of golf-instructor Randal Chase and english teacher Monette Chase. The family soon moved to Englishtown, New Jersey, where he lived together with his older brother, Albert, and his younger brother, Jared. Born into a conservative home, he was raised as Southern Baptist as was traditional for his family, although he describes himself as indecisive between atheism and agnosticism.

Randall and Monette, as much as they loved their sons, could not reserve time in their schedules to take care of their children. Pay was low and cost of living was high, so overtime was needed and normal. As a result, Albert was given a lot of responsibility at a young age, and at times had to act as a parental figure to his brothers, who were not really much younger than him. Even though the boys had their urges to fool around, their upbringing forced them to learn responsibility faster than most of their friends. They would do their homework and watch cartoons like normal kids, but they would also need to take out trash and do laundry even during their younger years. This also led them to be distant and rebellious towards their parents, however, they understood why their parents were never around, especially Charlton, who from a young age, could easily sympathize with people no matter how much of strangers they were.

As a third result of this hectic upbringing, time-management was forced upon the children. At times, Charlton needed to skip class to take care of Jared or any important responsibilities that had been left. However, as time flew, the boys were able to keep a tight schedule with minimal trouble – but as all tight schedules, something had to go. For Albert and Jared, it was sleep. Charlton, however, gave up his social life – a decision that would lead to bullying up to high school, which was mostly for answers in math and English tests, the former of which, he was good at, and the latter due to his mom's occupation

When Charlton entered Manalapan Highschool, his family decided that enough was enough. In order to reduce the bullying, Albert took on a part-time job at Starbucks to help his parents with the finances, while they help with the responsibilities of the house. This would free enough time for Charlton to improve his social life and for Jared to get more sleep. As a natural social butterfly, Charlton exceeded expectations. He joined the chess and basketball teams, participated in debates, and even joined a high school rock band called Kings of East Coast as bassist. Following his graduation, he enrolled in Princeton University through scholarship in 2001, where he decided to further his social skills. He majored in psychology with a focus on psychotherapy, while taking various workshops on finance and business. He graduated with the Batch of 2004 with honors.

Despite his prestigious graduation, Charlton was in desperate need for money. Jobs that had openings considered him overqualified, and he had to support his parents as well – something all three brothers had to do until their father cashed-in stock investments in Apple sometime after the creation of the WDT. Charlton took many odd jobs, such as Junior Analyst of Parental Relations in a relatively new and eccentric asylum, a trial in competitive Rock Paper Scissors, to the role of McDonalds' Birdie mascot for birthday parties. In 2006, Charlton's life changed for the better as he moved to New York City to work for the White and Case Law Firm as a junior executive accounts manager by referral of a college friend. He takes care of accounts worth less than a million dollars and receives a more than decent salary. Several salary raises have been made in the past six years, and rumor around the office is that a promotion is to be expected

With his new income, Charlton moved to a condominium unit in upstate Manhattan, where he met his neighbor, Rosaline Smith, and her friend, Elysia Rockford – daughter to a major WDT investor and heir to his corporation –, both of which are college students who decided to take traditional schooling for the social aspect of it. Although this union would have probably gone for the worst, the responsible and paternal Charlton, the frequently impulsive Rosaline, and the neighborhood cosplayer and otaku Elysia became  great friends. Charlton's close relationship with two girls much younger than him has been reason of confusion to his family, which shall only worsen if ever they realize that their relationship is more familial then friendly. As the years passed, the three have changed each other, balancing one's negative traits by slowly empathizing into another's positive traits.

PERSONALITY

Charlton is a high-spirited and optimistic character, much to the levels of a heart-felt romantic. This does not mean, however, that he is blind to the world's problems. It's just more productive to be happy and hopeful. He has the willpower of a turtle and understands that this hope can become contagious if done right, and encourages others to push forward and run the race, no matter how low the situation may seem. He believes not only in himself, but the abilities of others as long as a hint of drive is there. When he realizes this promise, he is quick to picking up this person and pushing him or her to their greatest limits. Because of this, Charlton works better with others. He will run neither behind or in front of you, but beside you where he is needed the most.

Charlton is easily excitable and tends to be dramatic towards his actions. He'll retaliate at you when you've done something horribly stupid, shout and curse when shocked, tell you if he's scared and ask if you are too, ask you to join him to a burger run if he's hungry, and boast loudly if his pride calls for it. However, there are times that he zones off of this personality – similar to a "work safe" switch. When in this mode, he is still gestural, but more concealed and attains a more classical definition of the word "charming."

Anyone that knows Charlton knows that he is a geek. As you enter his home, you will be greeted by numerous paraphernalia of old movies, all beautifully displayed: from replicas of Roger Moore-era James Bond gadgets, to an exact copy of Bruce Lee's yellow jumpsuit  from The Game of Death. Many of his heroes come from old movies of the spy, horror, or kung-fu genre, and he often puts himself in the mindset of these characters to prep himself for upcoming troubles and would even make references of them from time to time. His geekery does not keep solitaire to movies though, as Charlton is also a video game enthusiast, especially of the Playstation variety. One will easily catch him playing anything from something as new as Street Fighter V.S. Tekken or Assassin's Creed: Revelations to something as old as Monster Rancher 2 or Megaman Legends 1. He is also into table games such as Hungry Hungry Hippos and Jenga, as well as Nintendo games, which he got into recently, due to Elysia. Other forms of Charlton's enthusiasm include old-school rap, 60's to 90's rock music, and inexpressibly, burgers. Known to everyone, Charlton holds a detailed list of America's top burger joints, their best selling products, and a map that shows how to pass by each and everyone of these restaurants while spending the least amount of gas possible.

Even though Charlton tries to like everything for the sake of diplomatics, there are certain things that can get on his nerves. One of which are online videos made specifically to disturb and disgust the viewer, such as Two Girls-One Cup and Chimpanzee Rapes Frog. Charlton gets nauseous quite easily and detests these stronger than the usual person. He also dislikes certain exotic delicacies, such as deer penis, grub worms, and balut, as well as public kissing, creepy crawlies, and modern chick-flicks. The last of which is not because he has a male mind-set, but because most of them are horribly written.

ABILITIES

HAVE WE MET? | TALENT
Ever since Charlton was a child, sympathy and psychology were his talents and passions. He is an extremely talented people-person and will try to understand a person or animal as a whole before judging his or her actions. This also means that he is an amazing lie-detector and liar. However, he regards honesty highly and will usually express what he feels unless lying or masking would 100% be for the better of him.

IT'S NOT THAT WIBBLY WOBBLY | TALENT
Charlton's second talent – time-management and productivity – did not come naturally, but from his rough upbringing and the unavailability of his parents. Many of his friends and colleagues have attested that this ability – available in all the Chase brothers – is simply remarkable and joke about it, saying that they can travel back in time or slow it down. This is the primary reason why Charlton has taken many talents and observes many hobbies, which he can manage at either a weekly or daily basis.

SPEAKING OF… | TALENT
Charlton's job is to take care of accounts of White & Case, New York's top law firm, and America's top third. In order to spread his boundaries, Charlton took up intermediate knowledge in the world's leading languages through the help of Berlitz and Khan Academy. These languages are Japanese, German, French, Spanish, and Italian. He is to take Mandarin next when he finds time.

FRUIT OF THE DEVIL | WEAKNESS
As responsible as Charlton is, his main weakness is temptation. However, this is not of the sexual or monetary kind. Within Charlton is an inner child which falls prey to a well-cooked burger or a challenge within video games. This temptation shuts off, however, depending on his level of self-frustration.

APPEARANCE

Charlton is an African-American male, standing at 6'0". He has a lean build due to leisurely basketball practice, his Wii, and an addiction to competitively playing Dance Dance Revolution with his friends. His eyes are dark brown and his hair is black, however he is shaved bald, including his facial hair. His cheekbones are not so deep, his nose is thin but bulbs at the end, his eyebrows are deep-set, his lips are mildly thick, and his chin ends in a soft cleft. He is usually seen in business attire unless the event is spectacularly casual, or he is out for a morning jog. He is seen in different-colored neckties, however they are all of solid color.

Charlton retains the Mississipi black accent of his father, as do his brothers. Charlton rarely modulates this unless he is speaking a different language or imitating someone else as part of a joke.

Taking the subway from Norwood to 28th, Charlton Chase was on his phone as he pushed his way through the crowd.

"Yeah. I'll be there in a bit. Alright. Bye."

He pocketed his phone and looked around. Sure, Charlton's was not the most breath-taking, adrenaline-pumping job there is, but currently in his mind, he was Britain's finest secret agent traveling to a rendezvous point to meet up with a lead. Enemy assassins were on the prowl, and he needed a sharp eye to identify them before they identify him.

After some time of monotonous thinking without anything real happening, Charlton sighed, checked his watch, and returned to reality. His playful make-believes occurred more and more, ever since he and the girls had planned a sleepover for the next Friday, complete with a James Bond marathon of the Sean Connery era. He was excited, for instead of being dragged into one of Elysia's anime conventions or another of Rosaline's nature retreats, the three were finally going to do something Charlton wanted. However, what pleased him the most was that the two girls were actually excited about it. This was not a one-way deal. They had even made plans to dress in their most espionage-esque outfits and make one of Bond's favorite drinks. Rosaline herself had chosen the Old-Fashioned, a classic whiskey cocktail from 1880, Louisville, Kentucky of Angostura bitters, oranges,  bourbon, and a maraschino cherry.

Charlton rallied all of his patience. The wait was a terrible itch that he hid behind his poker-faced work mode. It was only two days left, but two days in the world of the impatient could mean the time it took for a single-celled organism to evolve into one of those innovators at the WDT. With the second hand of his Rolex moving slowly, and the date function moving even slower, Charlton had to find new ways to distract himself from distraction, and work his way back to his usual productive mind.

He took out his phone, opened the notes function, and scheduled his week even further, compressing what others would comprehend as an already tight plan.

And by the looks of y'all, I'm guessin' I'ma be here for quite some time. Now that really really sucks. Diablo 3 was coming out in a month. A month. Freakin' Diablo 3. Jesus!

Well, we can't fix that now, can we? Another thing I noticed was that you guys don't have internet. You know? I find that bull. How's a guy to survive without the damn internet? So I devised a plan.
